roadtrip - part one
wednesday, june 16 - left home around 6:50am [a coupla hours later than i was hoping] I-5 was moving pretty slow, so i ended up on 99/aurora for a bit. hooked back onto I-5 and followed it to olympia, where i hooked over onto the first stretch of highway 101.

once highway 101 turned north, i took highway 8 west. took a brief detour on 12 east by mistake. oops. if you're ever headed that-away, all you gotta do is stay on highway 8, since it turns into 12 west. on a happy note, i decided to just stop at a dairy queen for lunch. yummers. eventually i finished with the back-tracking, and took highway 12 west to 107 south to 101 south. i followed 101 south until just north of oregon. i took 103 north up just a bit to swing by long beach. walked on the boardwalk a little ways, then hooked back onto 101 and took that spiffy bridge into astoria, oregon. kept on heading south to nehalem bay park, where i had reservations to camp.

duh... which way do i go?
Nehalem Bay, Oregon the campground was actually kinda tricky to find--mapquest steered me wrong this time around. manzanita is kinda neat--it seemed to be quite the little tourist trap. i think it was kinda late by the time i got settled in, but i did take a nice long walk on the beach. that's a little jellyfish in the center there.

i went paddling around nehalem bay the next morning, from about 6:30-8:30am. it was quite windy & choppy, and at one point i had to drag the kayak over some tide flats for around ten minutes or so (low tide was around 8:30). the wind was really icky on the way back, so i decided i'd better not try to go all the way to where the bay opened up to the ocean. ho hum.

Tillamook Cheese

stopped here for lunch.
mmm... grilled cheese sandwich...

i had reserved a yurt at sunset bay state park near coos bay, oregon for thursday, june 17, so i had a good stretch of road to cover that day. i hiked around the sunset bay trails a bit on thursday night. not too long, as it was pretty much after uh... sunset.
Slippery Trail

i did a LOT more hiking around the following morning... friday, june 18. there's a little map of the trails, etc. on the back of this brochure. i was thinking about doing some kayaking here, but there were too many strikes against me [wind, low tide, lots of rocks, very foggy, etc.]. hence the plethora of hiking...

that afternoon i continued southbound on 101 into california. good times, good times.

friday night i arrived at the prairie creek redwoods state park. very neat place to hike.
i really wan
ted to swing by there again on the way up, but things just didn't work out. over to the right you'll see my campsite there at prairie creek; after caffeine consumption, i set out on a full-day hiking spree.

prairie creek redwoods trails
from the main trailhead, i took miner's ridge trail to the clintonia trail. then i took the james irvine trail to fern canyon... then followed the beach along the coastal trail until i got to the beach campground... then took miner's ridge back to the trailhead.
