roadtrip - part two
sunday, june 20 - headed south on 101 for a while. took highway 1 at the earliest opportunity... way more switchbacks than i could stomach. if i didn't have a campsite reserved i think i would've backtracked back to the 101.

arrived at the russian gulch state park late that afternoon. by 5pm i had setup camp & was ready to do a little bit of hiking. i took the fern canyon trail [not to be confused with the prairie creek redwoods place of the same name...] to the waterfall, then hooked onto the falls loop trail... which "loops" back to an earlier spot on the fern canyon trail [funny that a loop trail would do that...]. decided to take the high road on the way back to camp... so i took the north trail back. look at the last page on this brochure for a handy map of the trails around the park.

the next morning i went for a fun little paddle trip. nice happy swells... i was hoping to make it nice & close to a lighthouse, but got too tuckered-out about an hour-and-a-half into the journey & thought it wise to head back.

i continued down south on highway 1 to san francisco. the golden gate bridge was kinda neat, although i got kinda frustrated trying to find my way through the city and all the random little highways, bridges, etc. i ended up heading towards the airport to find a decent cheap hotel... stayed at the travelodge that night. the next morning i drove around town, as i wanted to at least drive through chinatown for a bit.

south of san fran i hopped back onto highway 1. stopped by the boardwalk/beach in santa cruz. i was hoping to stay at one of the big sur state camps, but didn't have any other campsites reserved yet for the rest of the trip. sadly, both of those and limekiln were all booked up. eventually found a national forest camp called kirk creek. not as nice as the state parks, but at that point was just grateful to find something. one handy thing of camping where i did that night was that it was right next to one of the launch sites mentioned in my cute little kayaking book.

so the next morning i drove a little ways down to the mill creek picnic site and launched from there. i really wanted to explore the sea caves, but the water was just too choppy. i tried to land and take a break where the book described to be a protected landing/launching site. must not have hit the right place, as landing and launching there was quite scary...

while i was mostly near the smaller, smoother rocks, i still could have died here. i had to take some time before launching back out again, but once i had cleared the wave-breaking zone, all was nice & smooth.

after tearing down camp, i set out south-ward on highway 1 yet again. i stopped off at one of the more notable vista points along the way here. folks come by here a little too often to see the elephant seals. lots of smaller animals have been fed by people to the extent that they'll sneak right up to you looking for a handout. made for a cute photo tho'.

i visited hearst castle in the afternoon, and went on one of the little tours. i ditched out on the bonus movie tho'. kept driving south on 1, with a little bit of 101, then back on 1... stayed at a motel 6 in lompoc on the night of june 23. ate some yummy fish tacos that night.
