west coast road trip part three

thursday, june 24 - didn't cover much distance... just drove over from 1 to 246 to buellton to buy a can of pea soup for dj404, then headed towards santa barbara.

i was hoping to spend the night at el capitan state beach, but i didn't have reservations & they were full-up. i back-tracked a bit to refugio state beach, where there was still a dozen+ campsites open. woo-hoo! can you say paradise? yes, refugio is boo-ti-ful!
refugio state beach
well, this was an odd sequence of plugin tweaks... thought i'd go for a nice little paddle late this afternoon. unfortunately the o-ring seal on my little waterproof digicam had some gunk in it, so i decided to leave it in the sportage. BIG MISTAKE.
a herd of small whales were swimming around me for about 15 minutes, sometimes coming within 10 feet of my kayak. and me without a camera... :(

of course, when i was walking around the same area the next morning, no whales. here's a GIF of some shots of the beach, including the infamous santa barbara tar.

kodak moment missed in paradise
i left refugio state beach just after 10am on friday, june 25th. drove "south" (actually eastbound for that stretch) on highway 101, aka el camino real, through santa barbara. i took a slight detour on 225 to check out arroyo burro beach, then hooked back onto 101. took an even quicker detour to drive on santa claus lane. merry christmas everyone!

kept on 101 through ventura... and, man... i've gotta live down there for a while. santa barbara or ventura... just need to find some spiffy job... [crosses fingers]

here comes chicken claws, here comes chicken claws...
on the road to palmdale, there are passengers...
just outside of ventura i hooked onto highway 126. followed 126 to I-5 south, stopped by in & out burger for a yummy lunch, then hooked onto highway 14 north.
so... what's for dessert? er, uh... desert. yeah.
arrived in palmdale on friday afternoon. drove around aimlessly for a while--trying to give chris a chance to get some sleep before i pestered him.

palmdale is a total stinking desert. for anyone who doesn't want to take my word for it, i present photographic exhibit A (the animated GIF to your right. yes folks, i watched a tumbleweed roll through the intersection. wow. toto, we're not in seattle anymore...
