west coast road trip part four

wednesday, june 30 - i went paddling around mission bay in san diego. i launched from dana landing, and circled clockwise around the bay. a helicopter passed overhead [left] while i was near the wildlife preserve.

lots & lots of paddling here... around a couple of small islands [vacation isle and fiesta island], and then past several parks and a hilton right on the beach, and then portaged across the road [that goes to fiesta island], and then past the backside of sea world... and then... NO AND THEN!!! er, uh... yeah. here's a spiffy map that will make it easier to see yonder paddle route.

psycho kayak gif, yo
you might be a vj if...: the kayak graphic to the left doesn't drive you bonkers.

i could've stitched the pan-o-rama shots into a crazy-wide pan-o-rama, but that just wasn't weird enough. extra dose of lossy-ness added for kicks. enjoy! :)

here's a spiffy sign and boat at dana landing. all in all i think i was paddling around a little over 3 hours that day.

amazing grace...

went to check out old town san diego for a while, mostly hoping to find something yummy to eat. couldn't figure out where to munch, so i ended up returning to the seafood/mexican place i ate dinner at the night before--just a few blocks from the travelodge. very tasty fish tacos and chicken burritos here...

mmm... fish tacos...
hoppy easter from san mateo!

drove up to san mateo, where i had reservations for the night of wednesday, june 30. by the time i set up the tent, it was pretty late. one funny thing about the campground is that it's over-run by rabbits. by the time i had set up the tent, it was getting a bit dark. i walked the trail towards the beach, but by the time i got down there it was _really_ dark, so i decided to just head back to camp. besides, i wanted to get to bed kinda early... so there'd be plenty of time to drive up to anaheim and spend the day at dizzyland! saw wil sasso there [madTV dude].

oooooo...
aaahhh...
sandpiper motel near newportafter a long day at disneyland, i decided to drive back out to the coast. started to get kinda sleepy just before hitting newport, so i stopped at the first spot i came across. it was actually kinda creepy--the security/chain lock on the door was broken, so that didn't help matters... drove around a bit trying to find a tide chart for newport bay. man, parking around there is annoying. think: lots and lots of quarters. blah.
newport beach
en route to casa del patsyafter hanging around at newport for a bit, i set out for corona, where i was gonna meet up with chris and dj pat d. got stuck in traffic in a few spots, but eventually made it to pat's place - probably around 6pm. here's a photo of pat & chris - both incredibly cool peeps >

spent around a day-and-a-half in corona, then headed back up to palmdale to hang out with some friends of the salsa-berries on july 4. i wasn't really all in the fireworks mode - may have had something to do with watching the fireworks at dizzyland on the first... headed up WAY north on monday the 5th, and it was WAY too hot. usually i'm not an AC fan, but i had to abuse the technology for a bit there. stopped off at sacramento to walk around the old town/boardwalk area. very groovy bridge there... and of course i took way too many shots of it.
Sack of Mentos Bridge

continued north up I-5 until i hit corning, and checked in to a hotel there by a bigserious poultry disease sign truckstop sorta dealio on monday night. stopped off in redding to find a starbucks, then continued north. here are a coupla photos i took at a rest area near lake shasta.

my last stop on the roadtrip was portland, oregon--to visit tim, xea, and napkin. had lots of fun with them and a couple of their pals on tuesday night and wednesday. wandered around trying to find a spiffy thai restaurant for lunch...

here's a few random shots - i think tim took most of these:

drove up north on I-5 on wednesday night, 7. hit seattle a little after 11pm and took a little detour on the westside--trying to get a nice photo of the cityscape over the water. gave up quickly, and finally arrived home in everett right around 1:20am. the next morning was my niece & nephew's birthday, so i drove up north of bellingham on thursday, july 8.
