:::orcas island photos:::

on sunday, i went on a long kayaking trip off the north end of orcas island.

---

the beach was quite extensive - had to haul the kayak quite a ways...
the sucia islands may look close in the photo below, but there's about
2 miles of open water separating them from orcas island.

mr. jellyfish says: "be patient - you're almost there!"

finally got to the sucia islands after paddling across open water for about 2 miles:

little sucia island is on the left; the main island on the right:

ah... the sun... surrounded by cottage cheese clouds and lens flarey goodness ;)

stopped here at shallow bay for a short break.

...on the water again...
i followed clockwise along the backside of the sucias

LOVE the water-thrashed rocks along these islands.
reminds me of the rockeries along chuckanut bay, but even better!

kung fu carl & his minions :)

but wait - there's more!

going around the far end of ewing island

making my way back around ewing - towards echo bay

the two finger islands as seen from echo bay

some rockery on a little island just northwest of the lower "finger island"

rounding the corner of aforementioned small island, towards the fingers:

another cameo appearance from the sun + cloudy goodness:

random sightings from the more north-east-er finger:

starfish montage - for the love of banzai!

stopped here for one last pitstop before the 2-mile trek back:

along with this harbor seal, i think i also spotted a dall's porpoise.
(either that, or maybe a baby orca...?)

this danger zone is actually called "parker reef" - supposedly the currents/tidal rips can get VERY bad here.
guess there was a kayaker that died in here a while back.
fortunately i didn't run into any nasty situations the whole time i was out paddling (over 6 hours!)

well, that's it for now. take a look at the main orcas island page if you'd like.
